chewing gum

Hi,

Yesterday, Levi (almost 2 years old) found a package of sugarless chewing gum, proceeded to eat (swallow) 5 pieces. I find I have a similar problem; when I come across good food (Chanie's fresh Challah / cake / Kugel etc.), I could eat 5 pieces without any regard to how it isn't good for me... The difference is that I am a full grown adult and (should) know better.

Two points 1.) As adults who understand what is good for us, we CAN control ourselves, but it takes work, we need to constantly remind ourselves that we want to be healthy. This is true in regards to physical diet, and also spiritual diet. As a healthy person, I eat this / I don't eat that. As a healthy Jew, I do this / I don't do that. The problem begins when we forget to think.  2.) We pray every day "Al tevienu lee-day nisayon" - Please do not bring us to temptation". This is a prayer asking G-d to do his part. We also need to do our part, to not put ourselves in temtations way (i.e. Only date Jewish. Stay away from the kitchen when the cake comes out the oven. Or whatever your challenge is)

Torah Thought: What it means to be a Jew

Before [Abraham’s] time there were righteous men and women, teachers and gurus, activists and do-gooders. But they were not Jews. Abram himself was, for many years, a teacher and spiritual guide, a champion of justice and truth, a bestower of charity and kindness. But he wasn't a Jew. Not yet.…” Click here for full article

Joke: One day a teenage girl brought her new boyfriend home to meet her parents, and they were appalled by his appearance: he looked and sounded like an unsavory character. Later, the parents pulled their daughter aside and confessed their concern. “Dear,” said the mother diplomatically, “he doesn’t seem very nice.” “Oh please, Mom,” replied the daughter, “if he wasn’t nice, why would he be volunteering for 500 hours of community service?”
